Vietnam: Glory Obscured Released

VGO Pegasus v1.1 is now available for download.  For those unfamiliar with the mod, Vietnam: Glory Obscured is a total conversion that helps focus gameplay on infantry units, with naval, air and mobile units playing a supporting role.  VGO has been in development for a few years, and the Pegasus release includes the complete U.S. side, with the VC and NVA coming in later releases.  Download VGO.

Thanks for doing this SuperKev… these mods are incredibly good. The VietNam one is very good as well although it is very buggy at the moment but well worth playing.

2. Robin Davies Says:

Sorry to leave this comment in 2 parts. I am not getting any noise from any of the choppers in the game… are you experiencing this? man this mod is fun all the same…

3. Rob Turnipson Says:

The Game crashes when it loads :(

4. super_kev Says:

What crash are you getting, and when?

5. robin davies Says:

make sure that you have the latest patch for zero hour…

the game does crash during play sometimes and will often crash after map selection or loading a saved game… but on start-up sounds like you don’t have the latest patch. (that was happening with me with CWC).

I know he asked you SuperKev… i just thought that might help.
By the way, are you getting sounds for your helicopters SuperKev or is that just on my iMac here?

6. alexander gross Says:

Have also the same problem, game crashes while loading and displaying the first screnn (before any menu). have already the last patch (GeneralsZeroHourMac1.0.4_EN) applied. using G5 iMac with OS 10.5.4. any luck to get it running?

7. marco Says:

In my case the game starts properly, menue selection works fine. but as soon as I wanna start the game (skirmish/training), it crashes…

latest patch is of course installed…

any ideas?

thx & best,

M

8. Robin Davies Says:

Hmmm. that is strange. I do know that I crashed a few times when I installed as well but I just wasn’t taking that as a final answer. I can open and play with all detail settings set to full.
What I have noticed is, my game will crash usually on the first couple of tries when I select a game in skirmish mode. After this, try again and it should open ok, but i have only played it… SuperKev is the guy who ported it so perhaps he can be more helpful.

The mod is fun enough to make it worth the headache.

9. super_kev Says:

Are you all using OS X 10.5.x? I’m wondering if the crashing is related to a I/O error that will be fixed in 10.5.5.

10. alexander gross Says:

wondering why? i have two other ZH folders with Mideast Crisis and Blitzkrieg 2.5 which are running well and making much fun. besides I had some trouble with MEC at the first install because of the Audio/Tracks folder which has made the game crash also at the first screen (like VGO).
I also tried to copy the components of VGO manual to the proper destination (don’t using the launch scripts) but had no luck. Because there is enough space at my HD I can copy the ZH folder multiple times to have every MOD in it’s own folder.
Waiting for OS 10.5.5 will take a long time.

Regards, alexander

11. alexander gross Says:

Ahh! Besides I forgot, Cold War Crisis has the same problem. Also doesn’t launch.

Alexander

12. marco Says:

@ super_kev: yes, I’m on 10.5.4

13. robin davies Says:

I had some troubles with installing myself so I ended up using an older backed up game that I had in storage which I dragged to my hard drive and installed the mods on. Seemed to install without problems for both CWC and VGO. I am not sure why but I did notice that installing the official Zero Hour patch was troublesome… I tried to install on a number of occasions and found that the update had not really installed in the right location. As soon as i tried the install of CWC and Pegasus on that older game that I had on file, the games worked no problem.

If you happen to have a backed up Zero Hour on a storage disc, give that a try. Maybe the Zero Hour installer won’t work on intel iMacs.

14. alexander gross Says:

Well I also experienced that the installer of the patch has some trouble if there are more than one Generals folder on the hard disk. I will try to do a clean install of ZH from DVD and then MOD it without installing the patch.

I will report tomorrow.

Regards, Alexander

15. robin davies Says:

I tried a clean install first but for some reason I was having no luck with it… that is why I moved the backed up game over to my iMac drive and tried the install on that… and it worked for both CWC and Pegasus. Again, i have no idea why but from what i recall the Zero Hour patch was not properly installing. Check your ZH directory to see if it actually has updated the game…
I only know that was the only way I could get the install to work for me was to take an older game with the patch. Doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to me but there you have it.

16. alexander gross Says:

Well seems you’re right. I tried a clean install installed VGO no luck, another clean install then applied ZH path 1.0.1, then installed VGO no luck.
I will have a look at the folder and check if patch was applied, but it seems so. In the generals folder there is the read me for the patch and it seems some files was updated.
Will keep trying to get it running. Strangly VGO crashed early – immediately after the small Zero Hour start picture – and if the patch is installed it crashed not until the VGO screen appears (but before any menu is shown).
I also has the problem that the launcher script does not work. It crashes with the error ‘Can’t find word 4 of “.”‘ or something like that.

A little bit confused regards, Alexander

17. robin davies Says:

I have seen that “Can’t find word of 4″ message on both CWC and VGO when the launcher is hit… clicking again will usually get rid of that and will launch the program… but that as all relative to getting the game off the ground to begin with. Definitely, without the patch you will crash…

I wish I had more info to give you… the folder that i ended up installing into had the old demo of CWC and the first Middle East Crisis version. I am totally baffled as to what is so different about this version of the game that it opens both CWC and VGO but perhaps if you can find those old versions and install, maybe you will get the game working. It is a real shame you are having so much trouble because these mods are even better than MEC… which i thought was the best mod so far.

When I have some time I will see if I can dig up some older stuff from my backup and install it to see if this truly makes a difference. Obviously, SuperKev, the kind person who ported it to Mac in the first place can run the mod so perhaps he has a better idea.

18. alexander gross Says:

I it would help I will send the OSX error log of the crash. I put it online at http://www.lochsberg.net/VGO_crash_error_log.txt , if you want take a look.

19. super_kev Says:

The crash log doesn’t tell me anything, unfortunately. I too have had random crashes, but since I upgraded my computer to OS 10.5 it seems the crashes have been more frequent, so I’m curious if it’s the overall stability of ZH itself in relationship to how it works with mods and 10.5. As far as “Can’t find word 4 of…” messages, I had one randomly appear, so that’s on the list of to-do’s… but click again and it’ll launch just fine like robin said.

Sorry about the crashes, I’m just as baffled as you. I have a hunch that it’s 10.5 related, but I’ll try a 10.4 machine later and see what goes on.

20. Robin Davies Says:

Hey alexander and SuperKev,

Seeing as I have a working game here, I am trying to install on my laptop to see if I can replicate what is making the game work for me here and let you know. I have gotten to where alexander was… game screen loads and then crashes. I remember a really weird bug with Mid East crisis that would crash because of music tracks so it has to be some small issue somewhere along the lines of that. You are right Alexander… nothing wrong with the patch when I did my clean install so I will keep looking around.

The game folder I installed into only had Blitzkrieg 2.6… so I tried installing that but still no luck but the answer is there somewhere.

21. Robin Davies Says:

by the way SuperKev, are you getting sound from your helicopters and MGs? I do not seem to be hearing anything for those units… I wondered if that is still being worked on.

22. alexander gross Says:

Well I also had the problem with Mideast Crisis with the audio tracks. If you’re replacing the Audio/Tracks folder with that from MEC the program will crash, but if you copy back the sounds from the unmodded ZH it will work. So it was my first thought to copy the original ZH sounds back to the Tracks folder after I ran “Config …” script, but had no luck.

I ran the patch installer yesterday while watching the files in the finder and it seems the patch installs properly, because I can see the “Zero Hour.app” updated (changing icon and file date) so there must be another issue which is resulting in the crash.

Regards, Alexander

23. robin davies Says:

I tried some older installers (for the patch) yesterday but still no luck. Sorry Alex, i did not mean that the tracks need to be replaced… I meant it would most likely turn out to be something similar. I just have to find what is different about my working copy to the one that will not launch properly. Please stay tuned… at least I have a working copy to figure this out with.

24. pigsdofly Says:

Hi, I’m having a problem. Whenever I turn off the “show broken arrow range” in the “Airstrike co-ordination center”, the game crashes.

25. super_kev Says:

Well, VGO is not the final version… so I’m sure there are bugs. I can’t help you out there, sorry.

26. AntiSocialKindaGuy Says:
Well, VGO is not the final version… so I’m sure there are bugs.
There seems to be a number of issues only on the Mac (the airstrike centre crash does not happen under Windows, all helicopters and MGs have sounds in Windows etc.) but I am unable to debug the Mac version so don’t know what the difference(s) are. =(

Regarding tracks, the game is known to fall over with a CD Not Found error when certain tracks cannot be found – which may translate to a crash on the Mac. Again, I don’t know if the directory structure is different, but if it worked for Kev presumably you’re hitting machine/install specific issues…

If you know what you are doing with .big files, ask me and I’ll upload them seperately to see if it helps.

27. super_kev Says:

I’ve been pretty busy lately so I’ll try to check up on it this coming weekend. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get my hands on a pre-release version (with debugging enabled) so it’s somewhat a shot in the dark. I’m also curious if it’s related to the OS (10.5 vs. 10.4) as I don’t remember people having this many problems back when we were all using 10.4. I’ll try to install 10.4 and see if I can figure things out.

28. Rob Turnipson Says:

Where can I download project raptor for mac? (macologist’s download center is down)

29. nicola Says:

Hi sorry 4 my question but i would know if this mod wor on powerbook G4 1.25GHZ with 512RAM and osx 10.4.11? Thanks. Nicola

30. Julien Says:

Hi, the same, i have 10.5.5 and the game crash before the menu.
Would be good idear to try the game before puting it online.
Me as many other are really frustated to don’t be able to play to this mod.
Please try to find a moment to resolve this problem fore us please, we will be all very greatfull;
Thanx.

31. robin davies Says:

I am playing VGO on an iMac (latest generation) with the newest OS so it does work on my computer… i did however have to install it on an older version of ZeroHour that i copied to my drive, as trying a new clean install was not working for me either. Unfortunately, I was unable to figure out why this was the case. Sorry everybody but i did try. It is a shame that it doesn’t work for all because it is an incredibly good mod.

32. sk8rdal Says:

Game crashes at startup screen.
PowerBook G4 10.4.11
1.5 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
zero hour 1.0.2

In the attached VGO 1.1 Manual there is a suggestion that you replace all .0VGO files with .big however I can’t seem to find any .0VGO files after a “successful install”….anywhere.

33. This Guy Says:

i think it requires you to have a intel mac and to sk8rdal u can find the .big files in the .dmg

34. super_kev Says:

This Guy: No, it’s PPC/Intel.
sk8rdal: The manual is from the developers, so that refers to the PC version. I have not been able to figure out the problems yet, as the coding “looks” fine, but there are some problems somewhere that interfere with the Mac build, causing crashes and audio glitches.

35. This Guy Says:

really? didnt work for me when i had a PPC and just recently got a new i mac and works for the most part except for a few maps crash well GL i guess and ty superkev for the mods that you have transfered to the mac =)

36. alexander gross Says:

Finally VGO Pegasus run at my new Intel iMac (OSX 10.5.6) for a while. It starts I can play the game but at a certain moment (I think when an explosion occurs) it crashes.

But I’m happy that it run for a few minutes.

Please super_kev keep on the good work the mod rocks.

Alexander
